Vishal Biyani

Engineering, building/breaking & many fleeting interests

I am Vishal Biyani, I think of myself as an engineer at large. I spent most of my childhood in a very small village (<4000 people). I loved building & built a model of meanders, waterfalls, deltas to show to teachers in 8th grade :) I was trained as a mechanical engineer in VIT Pune, Fluid Mechanics was one of my favorite subjects. Prof Bahulikar was inspirational in how he taught - showing us by opening up a scooter as part of the class. That influenced how I learnt things - by trying and understanding under the hood.

I joined Infosys as a graduate and learnt software engineering, how to build orgs & a lot more about life. I spent ~2.5+ years each in Mysore (2004-2006), Finland (2007-2009 Jyvaskyla and Jarvenpaa) & USA - Portland, OR (2010-2013). At Infosys I worked on PLM product called eMatrix for initial ~5 years including customizations in Java. I did all roles from being in support team to architecting newer releases. The last few years at Infy I worked on Spring Batch, Spring integration etc. building image related systems for a Fortune-100 sports company.

Mysore was amazing small town in many ways, and I loved my stay there :D The 3.5 months intense training among people from all over India was enriching experience. I ended up visiting Coorg, Kodaikanal, Madurai, Kanyakumari while there.

Finland opened door to an international world, taught a lot about working with customers & living a relatively solitery life. Also ended up visiting & learning Sweden, Norway, Estonia, Italy, Germany, Hungary, Netherlands & France. I tried to learn Western Flute from Emma but could not continue later, saw a lot of movies, learnt cooking, learnt to skate on my own. I watched some of my all time favourite time movies in this time including The lives of others, Cinema Paradiso & Schindler’s list.

US & Oregon specifically was beautiful mix of mountains, beaches and nature. I picked up photography seriously here & learnt a bit about sports working for a F100 sports company. Me and Sneha (My Wife) made many lifetime friends here, though we only stayed for ~2 years.

I moved back to India in 2013 from US and joined HCL Technologies. Learnt a ton of PreSales, solutions engineering, DevOps, Puppet/Chef/Ansible/Docker and my address was “Pune Airport” as I would call it. I made numerous flights - domestic and international to present to CXOs, do assessments for enterprises. I ended up adding Ireland, UK, Australia & more US visits to my passport.

I worked at an AdTech company called AudienceScience for a brief period. I did some amazing scale work in Salt and Apache Mesons - Marathon and I thought it will beat Kubernetes in long term!

I started InfraCloud along with Girish Shilamkar in 2016. Early years we did Outsourced Product Development (OPD) for a lot of startups in Cloud Native technologies. The rise of Kubernetes popularity lead to we working with enterprises in adopting cloud native. We scaled the company to 200+ people & built a strong brand recognised for our Open Source contributions, work & building a community of talented engineers.

Pune is my home for last ~10 years (after graduation 2000-2004). I am interested in weight training, standup comedy, photography & engineering/technology. I live with 2 daughters, wife and parents.
